This week, hundreds of thousands of Los Angeles Unified School District students returned to school, and in the coming weeks, nearly every young student in the city will be back in the classroom to kick off the new school year. As students get back to learning, I would like to remind parents, families and students to be safe and smart while making your way to school.Drivers should exercise extreme caution and use common sense on the roads when driving near schools. Motorists, including all parents, should slow down in school zones, be alert for small children and come to a full stop when a school bus's flashing lights are activated. Additionally, students should remember to look both ways before crossing the street and use designated crosswalks and intersections.

The LAPD North Hollywood Division awarded $100 gift cards to 25 at-risk youth to purchase school supplies for the new academic year as part of the department's "Shop with a Cop" program. | Photo: CD2

Homework Help As the homework begins to pile up, don't let the anxiety get the best of you and your family. The LA Public Library has many resources to help students get through their assignments. The library's Live Homework Help program can give students the tools they need to get ahead in school. More than 3,000 online tutors are available on demand every day from 11 am to 11 pm for one-on-one help with homework, skills building and test prep. Professionally trained and experienced tutors will help K-12 students and adult learners with math, science, English, writing, foreign languages and social studies. Visit www.lapl.org/lhh to access the library's tutoring program.
I hope you have a great school year. If you have thoughts or comments, please email me: [email protected].
