See the dedication ceremony of the new mural at Councilmember Krekorians Homeless Services Navigation Center
Gayle Alvarez is an artist and formerly homeless youth whose face adorns an extraordinary new mural at the San Fernando Valley Homeless Services Navigation Center. The mural, which was completed last month, uses objects and images from everyday life to tell the stories of 12 young people who experienced homelessness at a crucial time in their lives. The work is the culmination of a year-long Connectopod public media project Changing the Narrative: Unhoused Youth, which was created in collaboration with the Village Family Services Drop-In Center. Prominent local mural artist Levi Ponce oversaw the painting of the mural and mentored the young people whose stories are so vividly depicted.
