STUDIO CITY - Last week, the City Council voted to repeal the Studio City Residential Floor Area District (RFA), as it conflicted with the recently updated and more restrictive Baseline Mansionization Ordinance (BMO). In 2008, Los Angeles passed the original BMO, but many neighborhoods felt it did not go far enough and left too many loopholes for developers to exploit. Councilmember Krekorian agreed with the critics and, when he took office in 2010, worked closely with Studio City residents to come up with building rules for the neighborhood that supplemented the old BMO and helped protect the character of the community. The Studio City RFA went into effect in 2012, limiting the size of homes that could be built in the area. At the time, it was the widest ranging set of guidelines enacted to maintain the integrity of a Los Angeles neighborhood. Other neighborhoods throughout the city took note of Studio City's success and clamored for a permanent citywide fix.
Last year, the City Council followed Councilmember Krekorian's lead and made the updated citywide BMO the most restrictive anti-mansionization law in the city's history. Its passage also rendered the Studio City RFA unnecessary. Now, Studio City, the rest of Council District 2 and people across Los Angeles can enjoy enhanced protections in their neighborhoods.
