The Ad Hoc Committee on City Governance Reform meets again next week to continue its work restoring the people’s faith in the integrity of City government.
The Council President has submitted to the Committee a detailed list of proposed changes to the City Charter that would expand the City’s Ethics Commission, bolster its independence and strengthen its ability to enforce the City’s Ethics Code.
Among other changes, this proposal will increase the penalties for ethics violations and tighten conflict of interest rules for the Commissioners. If approved by the Committee and Council, these measures will be submitted directly to the voters as an amendment to the City Charter.
The Committee will also take up the Council President’s proposal for a Charter Reform Commission to study and propose further amendments to the Charter as needed, and vote on ballot language for the two Charter amendments already approved by the Council, creating independent redistricting commissions for the City Council and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
