LOS ANGELES, CA The Los Angeles City Council today approved $850,000 for a Stormwater Infrastructure Project at the corner of Ben Avenue and Victory Boulevard in the Sun Valley/North Hollywood area. The money comes from Proposition O, a 2004 measure that provides funds to prevent and remove pollutants from waterways and oceans.Remaining funds for the $2.5 million project will be provided by the Department of Water and Power and Community Redevelopment Agency excess funds. Construction is scheduled to begin next March.
This project will not only alleviate the significant flooding that for years has affected the intersection and surrounding neighborhoods, said Councilmember Paul Krekorian, who sponsored the motion, it will enable the DWP to recapture as much as 90 percent of runoff even during a major storm.
The project uses drywells to treat and infiltrate excess runoff within the project areas. Pretreatment swales are proposed upstream of the drywell systems to remove trash, sediment, nutrients, and other pollutants.
The swales will protect the quality of groundwater recharge while at the same time allowing infiltration.
The project will help achieve Krekorians goal of reducing LAs dependence on imported water and recharging the vitally important San Fernando Valley aquifer.
