LOS ANGELES - Councilmembers Krekorian and Martinez are calling for a review of recycLA, the city's new waste collection and recycling program for apartment buildings and commercial properties.The pair introduced a motion asking LA Sanitation to review the program's initial transition and discuss the problems and challenges experienced by customers, by the contracted service providers and by the city itself. The proposal also asks the department to provide a summary of the actions or efforts taken to address concerns that have been raised.
Since the program's launch last fall, businesses and property owners have raised concerns about the waste collection efficiency, increased rates and overall customer satisfaction.
RecycLA is part of the city's larger sustainability plan to reduce waste from landfills by 90 percent by 2025 and put LA on the path to zero waste. The new system divides the city into 11 zones, each of which will be served exclusively by one service provider for waste and recycling collection. According to LA Sanitation, the program will also result in fewer trucks congesting neighborhoods and less wear and tear on streets. Collection companies are also required to use only clean-fuel burning trucks, which will help to improve our air quality.
The report will be heard by the City Council's Energy, Climate Change and Environmental Justice Committee in early February.
