LOS ANGELES - Metro has joined forces with the 2015 Special Olympics World Games to encourage participants, fans and volunteers to ride Metro Bus and Rail services to and from major sporting events planned in the LA area from July 25 to Aug. 2 this summer.
The Special Olympics World Games, an international sports competition for children and adults with disabilities, includes more than 7,000 athletes representing 177 counties who are scheduled to participate in 25 Olympic-style sports in venues across LA County. The World Games will be the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world this year and the single largest event to be held in the greater LA area since the 1984 Olympic Games.
Metro has been named "Official Transit Provider" for the Special Olympics World Games, and will heavily promote public transit in the six weeks prior to the start of the Games' Opening Ceremony on July 25 at the LA Coliseum. More than 60,000 spectators from all over the world are expected to attend the Opening Ceremony, but approximately half a million spectators are anticipated to attend the events.
On July 23, join Councilmember Krekorian and a number of community partners for the final leg of the 2015 Special Olympics Torch Run in Studio City to cheer on the athletes as they make their debut in the Summer Games.

An international team of 126 members, which includes 88 law enforcement officer runners and ten Specials Olympics athletes will serve as Guardians of the Flame as they deliver the Flame of Hope to the 2015 World Summer Games Opening Ceremony.
