LOS ANGELES - One year after a devastating fire destroyed the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission in North Hollywood, the Mission celebrated the opening of a new 90-bed homeless shelter in Northridge. The 16,000 square foot facility, called "Home Again," offers a safe and nurturing environment for families that are facing the challenges of homelessness. The new shelter contains private family bedrooms, a commercial kitchen, a common dining room and living spaces, meeting rooms, a computer education center, and a playground and garden - all geared toward helping families achieve a brighter future. Famed interior designer Emily Henderson, season five champion ofHGTV Design Star and host of Secrets From a Stylist, added her decorative touch by designing the shelter's interior spaces.
Councilmember Krekorian spearheaded a major effort to get city leaders, city employees, and businesses and stakeholders, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, to help rescue and rebuild the Rescue Mission. Through his effort and others, the Rescue Mission has raised millions of dollars to continue housing and serving homeless people in the San Fernando Valley.
