LOS ANGELES - The City Council created a new committee to discuss LA's bid for the 2024 Olympics. Councilmember Krekorian, who chairs the city's Budget and Finance Committee, was appointed to the Ad Hoc Committee on the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The seven-member panel met last Friday morning to consider the proposal for LA's bid to host the 2024 games. The members heard presentations by city analysts and the LA24 bid committee, the nonprofit organization that will pursue the bid. Following the discussion, the committee advanced an amended agreement that will provide the City Council with the ability to oversee and approve any contract Los Angeles enters into as a host city and incur liabilities.
If approved, the agreement will serve as a commitment by city leaders to pursue the games in the event that the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) chooses Los Angeles as the nation's bid city.
"Los Angeles is a city with a strong Olympic tradition," Krekorian said. "This is the first of many steps that the Council and the Ad Hoc Committee will take. We started the process, but for the next year, we'll be evaluating the bid to examine the benefits and the potential costs to ensure that we continue to protect the taxpayers."
Los Angeles was host to the Olympics in 1932 and 1984. The USOC will submit its pick to the International Olympics Committee by Sept. 15.
