Council President Emeritus Paul Krekorian welcomed representatives of the Environment California Research and Policy Center, California Public Interest Research Group, and the Los Angeles Business Council to City Hall this week to announce release of Renewables on the Rise 2024, the online dashboard that enables visitors to explore clean energy growth in California and the nation over the past decade.
Last year, 40 percent of retail electricity sold in California was generated by renewable solar, wind and geothermal power, and California ranks number one in the nation for growth in battery storage capacity. Growth in the state’s use of clean energy is driven by local policies such as LA100, the City’s commitment to 100 percent carbon-free electrical generation by 2035.
“These things don't happen on their own. They happen because policy makers enact policy that causes these societal shifts to happen," said Councilmember Krekorian, author of the original 2016 motion calling for a comprehensive plan for 100 percent clean energy.
In addition to positive impacts on climate change and air quality, Krekorian notes the economic benefits of a transition to clean energy. “This is the foundation of our economic future. There are already half a million Californians employed in the clean energy sector. LA100 will create another 10,000 jobs in construction and maintenance here in Los Angeles.”
