LOS ANGELES - City and state leaders joined Metro officials, community members and U.S. Dept. of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to break ground on the transportation agency's Regional Connector project in Little Tokyo.The $1.4 billion project will better connect the Metro Blue, Gold and Expo lines with the rest of the region. It will provide a one-seat, one fare ride for commuters from Azusa to Long Beach and from East Los Angeles to Santa Monica without the need to transfer between rail lines.
Metro is scheduled to construct a 1.9 mile segment between the Metro Blue and Expo Lines and the Metro Gold Line by providing a direct connection with three new stations planned for First Street and Central Avenue, Second Street and Broadway, and Second Place and Hope Street in downtown Los Angeles.
Once complete, the connector is expected to attract nearly 17,000 new daily riders and provide access to more than 88,000 passengers saving commuters up to 20 minutes off their daily commutes.
The Regional Connector is scheduled for completion in 2020.
