Metrolink Meets Goal of 100 Percent Renewable Fuel

Posted on 05/03/2022

(April 13, 2022) On April 13, Metrolink annnced its transition to 100 percent renewable fuel, the first rail agency in the entire country to achieve this goal. This is a major achievement in pursuit of our regional air quality goals and an important step in addressing climate change, said Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, a member of the Metrolink board.
When we adopted the Climate Action Plan last March, 100 percent renewable fuel was considered a stretch goal, but less than 13 months later its a reality, said Krekorian. This shows the kind of progress we can make when we combine ambitious goals with careful planning and effective execution.
Metrolink operates seven lines and 62 stations serving six counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Ventura. The agencys transition from fossil fuels to recycled natural oils (vegetable cooking oils and animal fats) could result in as much as an 80 percent reduction in CO2 emissions, as well as a 30 percent reduction in particulate matter and a 35 percent decline in carbon monoxide. This progress is on top of the 65 to 85 percent reductions of emissions that Metrolink has already achieved by switching from less efficient older locomotives to energy-saving Tier 4 models the cleanest locomotives used by any railroad in the country.
Todays announcement marks significant progress towards our regional goal of a zero emissions transportation system, said Krekorian. Along with the ongoing electrification of Metro buses, the EV Master Plan for an all-electric fleet of City vehicles, and our LA100 Plan for carbon-free electricity, local governments and regional transportation agencies are taking the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fighting climate change.
