Our Los Angeles River is getting better, more beautiful and more usable by the day.
The 51-mile river starts in the San Fernando Valley and winds its way through many Los Angeles neighborhoods, including Studio City.
On Saturday, June 21, I proudly joined Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and the Village Gardeners to mark the opening of Studio Citys North Valleyheart Riverwalk Project.The Riverwalk Project funded by LA County, a beautification grant from my office, along with help from others is a half-mile stretch of greenway along the LA River. It includes a pedestrian and bike friendly multi-use river trail from Coldwater Canyon to Fulton Avenue, and features a concrete and stone entry way at Ethel Avenue. There are stone seat walls shaded by California native plants along the path. This urban oasis is also home to a marvelous new mural by local artist Kevin Carman, called The Mighty Steelhead.
The stone mosaic mural depicts a steelhead trout and is composed of more than 40,000 stones collected by Carman for the public art piece. This is such a great project. It was a true partnership of government agencies and community partners that benefitted from a collective vision and goals.
Studio Citys Village Gardeners, a non-profit volunteer organization, rolled up their sleeves and did the hard work to bring the Riverwalk to fruition. They will also be the caretakers of the project.
The Riverwalk is now open to the public and ready for families to use. I think youll agree that its a great addition to the neighborhood that enhances the overall quality of life in our Valley.
