Valley Councilmembers Paul Krekorian and Imelda Padilla cut the ribbon celebrating the final phase of construction of the San Fernando Road Bike Path, a 9.8-mile continuous cycling route running from Sylmar to Burbank. Running diagonally across the San Fernando Valley, the completed project represents a dramatic expansion of recreation and active transportation opportunities for Valley dwellers and visitors.
Much of the San Fernando Road Bike Path is situated within the Metro right-of-way, adjacent to an active rail line used by Metrolink and Union Pacific trains. Completion of this project required close cooperation between multiple agencies, including Metro, Metrolink, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), the Department of Public Works (Bureau of Street Lighting, Bureau of Engineering, and StreetsLA).
Among the new features of the final phase of construction:
- 4.75 miles additional miles of paved bike path
- Paved bus stop waiting areas
- Bikeway bridges over Tujunga Wash
- Bikeway lighting
- Safety fencing between bike path and rail line
- Bicycle-activated signals at intersections
- New crosswalks
- American Disability Act (ADA) compliant accessible ramps
- Major track and railroad signal modifications at 12 intersections.
