The development of the NoHo West retail and residential complex brought renewed economic vitality to a site that had suffered since the Northridge earthquake, but it also brought an excessive and dangerous amount of cut-through traffic to residential Radford Avenue where it approaches Oxnard Street.
Council President Krekorian, District 2 staff, StreetsLA, the Department of Transportation, and the Laurel Grove Neighborhood Association, have implemented a safe and cost-effective solution. With road striping and signage changes at the intersection of Radford and Oxnard Street, the new Refuge Island eliminates through traffic on Radford while permitting safer turning options for drivers on both streets, and protecting pedestrians while still allowing access for emergency vehicles. Laurel Grove Neighborhood Association President Diann Corral joined the Council President, StreetsLA Executive Director Keith Mozee, and Laurel Grove neighbors for a festive ribbon-cutting to mark the occasion.
On another safety note, Council District 2 now has 27 crossing guards assigned to area elementary schools, a 35 percent increase over the previous school year.
