Councilmember Krekorian serves as the San Fernando Valleys representative on the board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (Metro), the agency that plans, operates and coordinates funding for transportation throughout Los Angeles County.Light RailThe Metro board has approved plans for the first light rail line in the Valley since the demise of the Red Cars in the 1950s. The East San Fernando Valley Corridor project will be one of the most important and transformative projects to be built in the Valley, linking the Van Nuys Metro station to the Sylmar/San Fernando Metrolink station and providing swift efficient service to some of the busiest commercial and residential areas of the Valley.
Electric BusesThis year has seen continued progress towards the goals of more efficient and environmentally sustainable transportation for Los Angeles. In October, Metro completed the conversion of the Valleys Bus Rapid Transit Line (known as the Orange or G Line) to zero-emission electric buses, achieving a goal that Councilmember Krekorian initiated five years ago. The electric buses are both cleaner and quieter than their predecessors.
Metro has approved a plan to convert the systems entire bus fleet the nations second largest to zero-emission vehicles by 2030. This ambitious plan was made possible by the passage of Measure M.
As the City of Los Angeles follows through with its LA100 plan to convert the entire Los Angeles electrical grid to carbon-free energy, these vehicles will be powered by clean electricity, improving our air quality and reducing our carbon footprint.
