LOS ANGELES (February 10, 2023) — On Thursday, Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian broke ground on long-awaited recreation and accessibility improvements to the Chandler Bikeway. The Council President was joined for the occasion by Keith Mozee, the General Manager of StreetsLA; Aura Garcia, President of the Board of Public Works; and Maria Sosyan, President of the North Hollywood Neighborhood Council.
Two new recreation areas, on the south side of Chandler, at Satsuma and Cartwright Avenues, between Cahuenga Blvd. and Vineland Ave., will include exercise equipment, enhanced accessibility features, new fencing and signage, new trees, lighting, and drainage provisions to keep the path dry while conserving water.
Council President Paul Krekorian initiated $1.2 million of funding to make improvements to the Chandler Bikeway, a heavily used community asset for both recreation and mobility.
“We’re making an incredible series of improvements in North Hollywood, in both transportation and recreation, and the Chandler Bikeway is a place where those two things really come together,” said Council President Krekorian.
“The improvements and new amenities to the Chandler Bikeway will provide safe access for bicyclists and pedestrians at two cul-de-sacs, while adding greenery through tree planting and pedestrian lighting,” said Board of Public Works President Aura Garcia. "We thank Council President Krekorian for securing funding for this project.”
“I'm proud of our StreetsLA crews for their hard work to design these improvements that will make the Chandler Bikeway safer and more accessible for bicyclists and pedestrians,” said Keith Mozee, Executive Director and General Manager of StreetsLA. “I'm also grateful to the many partners involved in this project, including Council President Paul Krekorian, the Bureau of Street Lighting, Department of Transportation, General Services Department, LA Metro, and the local community here in the San Fernando Valley.”
Last November, Krekorian announced the full funding of a project to close the three-mile gap between the Chandler Bike Path and the existing Orange Line Bike Path. “Thanks to funding we received from Metro, and from the State of California through the work of Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, we are closing the gap in this Bikeway so it will be one continuous ride all the way from Burbank out to the West Valley,” said Krekorian.
When these paths are connected, they will form an uninterrupted cyclists’ highway running 21 miles from Burbank in the East to Chatsworth in the West. “This has been a big priority for this area for a long time,” said Krekorian. “And now it’s becoming a reality.”
