Throughout his career in public life, Paul Krekorian has been dedicated to protecting our environment and combating the threat of climate change caused by the emission of greenhouse gasses into our atmosphere.
On the City Council he initiated the study that led to LA100, a practical step-by-step plan to convert the City of Los Angeles to 100 percent carbon-free electrical generation by the year 2035, a decade ahead of the state’s target date.
He also introduced the measure that led to the City’s historic decision to declare all oil and gas drilling a nonconforming use in the City of Los Angeles and initiate the process of phasing out the existing extraction sites. He was a strong voice in the Council’s decision to eliminate the use of natural gas in City buildings and all new construction, replacing gas heating and cooking with electricity generated from carbon-free sources.
The Electric Vehicle (EV) Master Plan he instigated has led the City to pursue conversion of its own fleet to electric vehicles and to build EV charging infrastructure throughout the City. As a member of both the Metro and Metrolink boards, he has led the adoption of electric buses on Metro’s dedicated busways and supported Metrolink’s conversion to all-renewable fuels.
He has also been a leader in eliminating the plastic waste that clogs our waterways and poisons our food chain, leading successful initiatives to end most commercial uses of styrofoam in the city, and ban or limit distribution of single-use utensils, bags and bottles.
